RI Nursing Foundation Accepting 2009
Scholarship Applications
The Nursing Foundation
of Rhode Island is accepting applications for its 2009 Nurse Scholarship
Program. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and are awarded on a
competitive basis to students enrolled in Rhode Island schools of
nursing including degree, diploma and practical nursing programs.
Students must demonstrate financial need, have maintained a 3.0 GPA (2.0
for practical nursing) in their formative years. Preference is given to
students who are residents of Rhode Island and who are in the latter
half of their nursing program.
The application deadline for the scholarships is June 1st for RN
students and May 1st for practical nurse students. To apply a student
must submit a short essay with a cover letter, a copy of student’s
official transcript and two letters of recommendation, one from nursing
faculty, to the Scholarship Committee. The application materials should

Applications and details on the application process can be found on the
Nursing Foundation's website at
www.rinursingfoundation.org. Notification for the practical nurse
scholarships is in May and for the RN scholarships in mid-July.
History and Mission
The Nursing
Foundation of Rhode Island (NFRI) was incorporated as a non-profit
organization in the state of Rhode Island in 1991. The purpose of NFRI is
to promote nursing in charitable, educational and scientific ways. Its
mission is threefold:
 | to increase public awareness of nursing and
its role in promoting health and well-being, |
 | to foster the advancement of nursing through the awarding
of research grants and scholarships; and |
 | to preserve the history of nursing in Rhode Island. |

Programs
The two major programs provided by NFRI which provide direct
benefits or assistance are:
 | a scholarship program for student nurses and nurses seeking
graduate degrees, and |
 | a research grant program for graduate level nurses.

Accomplishments
 | Awarded
student nurse scholarships to over 120 undergraduate
and graduate students attending Rhode Island
nursing education programs including the Community College of Rhode
Island, Rhode Island College, Salve Regina University, St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and
the University of Rhode Island. Many of the students who have
received scholarships are non-traditional students trying to juggle their
studies with work and family responsibilities, including child rearing.

 | Initiated the Clare Sullivan Nurse Leader
graduate scholarship named after a noted Rhode Island
nurse leader and founding member of the NFRI Board of Trustees who died
during 1998. Clare Sullivan nurse leader scholarships of $1,000
have been awarded to eight individuals.

 | Provided
$35,207 in research grants ranging from $765 to $2500. Research grants
are used to support research on clinical nursing that will improve
patient care and for nursing education research that will improve
curriculum and/or retention of students. Projects
have included studies on the effectiveness of patient care models and
ethics and human rights in nursing practice.

 | Provided financial support to both the State Nurses
Association and the State Student Nurses Association to assist with
various educational programs and conferences. |
