Marks its 20th Anniversary
Awards 2012 Nurse Education Scholarships and Research Grants

The Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island (NFRI) marked its 20th anniversary and awarded scholarships to twelve nursing students from area colleges and two nursing research grants at a ceremony held on July 17th at the College of Nursing at Rhode Island College. The ceremony was dedicated to Nina Bodine a great friend of nursing who passed away this year. Ms. Bodine was the mother of Jane Williams, Dean of the College on Nursing. Dean Williams welcomed the students, Nursing Foundation Trustees and guests and spoke of the valuable role nurses play in the health care system and the many opportunities available to those who pursue nursing careers. NFRI President Trudy Mulvey, PCNS, RN, noted this year marked the 20th anniversary of the Foundation whose mission is to foster the advancement of nursing in Rhode Island through scholarships and nursing research. Mulvey was joined by Foundation Trustees and donors in presenting the scholarship awards and research grants. The scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,000, were awarded to students based on their good academic standing and demonstrated need.

Student nurses selected for the scholarship awards include:

Community College of Rhode Island nursing students Audra Costa of Riverside, Melissa Ianotti-Murdock of Carolina and Arthur Taylor of Cranston received awards from the Zanella Fund and Marie DeFazio of Cranston from the Elsie Drew Lewis Fund. St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing student Deborah Anne Boory of Providence and URI student Jasowolu Sayagbe of Providence received Ethel Ferrara Fund awards. URI students Loretta Byanksi of Warwick and Camille Coia of North Smithfield received awards from the Kathleen Dwyer Fund; James Taber of Tiverton a Helen Enright Fund award and Trystan DelTufo of Exeter a Nield Fund award. Salve Regina College student Edem Kuada of North Providence received a Melaregno Family Fund award. In addition to the undergraduate scholarships, Desirae Dutra, RN, a University of Rhode Island graduate student was awarded the Clare Sullivan Memorial Leadership scholarship to pursue Nurse Practitioner studies.

Nurse researchers Ginette Ferszt, PhD, RN, of the URI College Nursing and Marilyn Asselin, PhD, RN of Dartmouth College of Nursing were awarded nursing research grants. Dr. Ferszt is continuing her research on health issues of women confined to the Rhode Island Women’s Correctional facility. Dr. Asselin is working to develop an instrument on critical reflective inquiry for nurses.

Incorporated in 1992, the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Managed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, the non-profit Foundation has awarded 183 nursing scholarships and 16 nursing research grants since its inception. Awards 2011 Nurse Education Scholarships and Leadership Awards

Sixteen nursing students from area colleges were awarded scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year by the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island. The scholarship awards were presented at a reception held in July at the URI College of Nursing, Kingston, RI. The scholarships, ranging from $250 to $1,000, were awarded to students based on their good academic standing and demonstrated need.  Trudy Mulvey, NFRI President, was joined by Foundation Trustees and donors in presenting the scholarship awards.  

Scholarship recipients in undergraduate programs included University of Rhode Island student Trystan DelTufo of Exeter; Rhode Island College students Jaimie Borden of Warwick, Marie Polverino of Barrington and Samantha Norris of Swansea; Community College of Rhode Island students Joanne Hadfield of Warren, Shannon Holmes of Greene, Janet Hawkins of Middletown, Laura Horta of Bristol, Patricia McGuirl of Warwick, and Kathleen Wapenski of Foster; St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing students Deborah Boory of Providence and Jennifer Jennings of Cranston; and Salve Regina University student  Holly Sapien of Newport.

In addition to the undergraduate scholarships, Susan Amalfitano, RN and Jeanette Gourd, RN were awarded Clare Sullivan Memorial Leadership scholarships to pursue advanced degrees in nursing.

Awards 2010 Nurse Education Scholarships

Sixteen nursing students from area colleges were awarded scholarships for the upcoming academic year by the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island. The scholarship awards were presented at a reception held on July 21st at the URI College of Nursing, Kingston, RI. The scholarships, ranging from $250 to $1,000, were awarded to students based on their good academic standing and demonstrated need. 

Dr. Dayle Joseph, Dean of the URI College of Nursing, welcomed students and their guests to the College noting how important the work of the Nursing Foundation is in assisting students  financially in these difficult economic times. Jeanne Sherman, NFRI Vice President, was joined by Foundation Trustees and donors in presenting the scholarship awards.  

Scholarship recipients include University of Rhode Island students Megan Alexander of North Kingstown, Trystan DelTufo of Exeter, Christina Glorighian and Kathleen McKeon of Cranston and Jennifer Rice of Coventry; Rhode Island College students Jaimie Borden of Warwick, Elizabeth Brais of East Providence, Alison Newton Euston of East Greenwich, Susan Johnson of Providence and Samantha Norris of Swansea; Community College of Rhode Island students June Berdos of Attleboro and Kathleen Wapenski of Foster; St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing student Maureen Flanagan of Warwick; Salve Regina University student Jerry Bonner of Narragansett and Bristol Community College student Suzanne Woodmansee of Johnston.
